Embattled

Alarming animosity towards displays of Christian culture within our wider American culture have disturbing implications for the free practice of religion in the United States. In the name of tolerance, intolerance is growing. Throughout its history, the U.S. has provided an example which has been a tremendous impetus for good in the world. Silencing the religious sensibilities which are the foundation of that goodness is at best blind and at worst diabolical.

For most of my life I have tried to serve the cause of Christ in my own small way. Through the grace of Christ, I’ve tried to “fight the good fight of faith� * by doing good works and battling my own personal failings. In this battle, my fortress has been the encircling arms of Christ and my defense his Word and Spirit.

I reluctantly add to the private practice of my faith a more public defense of that faith. Enemies of religion, especially enemies of Christianity run roughshod over long held traditions and hard won freedoms. Embattled by such public foes, I feel the need to launch a public defense.

It is a battle for the human heart, a wrestle for a reasonable understanding of the essential role of religion in society and the appropriate role of religion in public life. I am embattled by forces hostile to my faith, but my fortress is sure. There is little to lose and hopefully much to gain by defending the culture and values which are the bedrock of the greatness of the United States of America.

Ezekiel 36:26 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.�
